Not Your Ordinary Summer

Not Your Ordinary Summer

June 16, 2020

The season that we all have been waiting for has arrived, it’s officially summertime! Long days of fun under the sun, road trips, warm weather, beach time, cocktails, and ice cream dripping down sticky fingers are just some of the things that we are looking forward to this sunny season. But because of COVID 19, which is a huge bummer for this glorious time of the year, there are some plot twists that we may encounter along the way. Although we are strictly advised to stay home and practice social distancing, there are still plenty of cool and exciting things to do at home to make this one of your unforgettable summer moments.

Here are some ways to create a not so ordinary summer to remember:

Now that we have plenty of time on our hands (and we mean months of it), you have the opportunity to deep clean your home and do a total re-decoration! You are called to make a house haul and start decluttering your closet (Marie Kondo way). Learn to let go of the things or house decors that doesn’t spark joy and start displaying items that reflect the sunshiny vibes of summer time. Bring the colors and feelings of this season into your home. Shell-abrate good times!

  • Hang brightly colored and flowy Curtains
  • Set your furniture with a tropical or floral ensemble
  • Install nature or citrusy scented candles or humidifiers
  • Use floral or tropical fabrics in your pillows and beddings
  • Turn your patio or porch into a summer nook by putting beach themed decorations

Amidst these trying times, it is still important to give yourself some tender lovin’ care! We must learn to adopt a positive mindset in order to get rid of negative practices and build good habits and behaviour. It usually starts with becoming more aware of ourselves, behaviours, and reactions. It requires that we earnestly desire to improve and transform ourselves, better our lives, and build good relations with people. It is the best time to go out of your comfort zones and indulge in new routines to promote self-upgrade this holiday. You can also wear your summer OOTD with your matching flip flops even at home so that you can always be ready to seas the day!

  • Read a new book every day.
  • Learn a new language.
  • Pick up a new hobby.
  • Have a weekly exercise routine.
  • Eat healthy and nutritious meals.

One of the best ways to celebrate the warm weather is to spend quality time with your little ones is crafting! Rather than heading to the store and purchasing your art materials, take matters in your own hands, and whip up any DIY summer crafts-especially those symbolize the sunny weather months. Awaken the art master in you and get creative with these crafting ideas and preferably using materials that can be taken from nature or in your own household.

  • Painted treasure rocks
  • Tree bark canvas
  • Milk carton birdhouses and bird feeders
  • Tin can wind chimes
  • Make a nature suncatcher

More often than not, summer recipes mean no-cook meals, crunchy salads, and other dishes that are labeled as refreshing. That is all well and good but after a long hard day at work or doing chores at the house, everyone deserves a little more comforting treat. Preparing the food while your kids set the indoor/outdoor dining table will also be a great way of spending quality time with your loved one. Spice up your kitchen with these warm-weather thirst quenchers and munchies!

  • Summer Panzanella Salad
  • Lobster Roll
  • Tortilla Peperoni Pizza
  • Watermelon Lemonade
  • Orange Creamsicle Smoothies

As we are coping for the “new normal” phases of our lives because of the virus, it will not stop us on having the best summer of 2020! There may be a limit of outdoor activities but we can surely create a backyard haven for some physical activities with the kids. It is best to widen our imagination and gather wonderful memories with our family as you make the most out of your vacation. Take them back in time when your summer memories are filled with DIYs and extraordinary adventures. Don't get ‘em tide down!

  • Build a fairy garden.
  • Play water activities in your inflatables or pool (have a slip n slide)
  • Backyard camping and stargazing with bonfire and smores
  • Have a backyard scavenger hunt
  • Play your favorite board games
  • Reef
  • Snakes and Ladders
  • Uno Cards
  • Scrabble
  • Ticket to Ride

Summer season speaks of endless fun under the sun and activities for the whole family. Although we are restricted in our homes doesn’t mean that we can’t make it a memorable one. Take this season to spend quality time with your loved ones in the comforts of your home. But let us not forget to take care of ourselves by following safety precautions even in our homes- wash hands with soap and clean water, use alcohol to sanitize your hands, practice physical distancing, eat nutritious meals and take vitamins. These times may be tough but there is indeed no place like home!
