New Year - New Goals: How to Slay Your Goals in 2019

January 10, 2019

"New year - new goals!" is the mantra that most of us are singing these first days of 2019. If like me, you are serious about achieving your goals for this year, here are a few tips that can help.

  1. Write down the vision

Take time to sit down, focus, and picture who and where you want to be at the end of 2019. Once you have a clear picture in mind, write everything down in great detail, so your mind is clear of your destination and how you intend to get there. It will build a fire and focus in you, that will help you stay the course throughout the year.

  1. Simple planning

Once you make realistic goals, you have to plan how to make them a reality. The right way to plan goals is to simplify them. Think of when you have a big steak to eat. You cut off pieces of it bit by bit until you finish it all. Similarly, divide your goals into small, achievable tasks that will get you to your destination without overwhelming you.

  1. Get help!

You will need lots of help to slay your 2019 goals. So, find a mentor or accountability partner to help you stay on track when you feel like giving up. There are also some things you can use to help you gradually achieve your objectives. Here are a few examples;

  • Planner: Writing down your goals in a daily planner. It allows you to have a task for each day, week or month that you can concentrate on to fruition. It's also a great way to keep you motivated and will help you stay on track.
  • Books and tapes: Motivational tapes and books will help lift your spirits when you feel like giving up. Read or listen to these inspirational items for some encouragement each day such as when driving to and from work.
  • Journal: Buy a journal to document your journey, where you write down short accounts of your efforts each day. Make sure you include pictures, measurements, cash balances and any other statistics on your goals. It helps to look back and monitor your progress any time you feel down.
  • Vision board: This is a visual map of what you want to achieve. Write down your goals on a blank board and next to them stick pictures depicting these things. Alongside the visual depictions of your goals, also write the benefits you expect such as a raise or promotion to keep you focused.

  1. Routines and habits

You have higher chances of sticking to something if you make it a daily habit. Be organized and dedicate some time each day to a routine that will make each task leading up to the achievement of your goal manageable. For example, if you want to master a new language, a good way of doing this is to learn a new word each day and how to use it in a conversation.

  1. Milestones and rewards

Fatigue often overwhelms us after some time of working at a task. To avoid this, set benchmarks for your journey and reward yourself each time you get to them. For example, if you need to lose weight, make plans after the loss of every five to ten pounds to reward yourself with something you love such as a spa day.

  1. Fail forward!

The tricky part about new year resolutions is to maintain motivation after a bad day or two. If you want to quit smoking and are doing good for a while but find yourself smoking a few days later - don't give up! Just chalk it up to a bad day and get back on the horse the next day. If you do this, slaying your goals this year will be certain.

These are just a few tips you can use to accomplish your goals in 2019. Everything is possible with some commitment. Using these tips will help you commit to your goals and obtain great results. We wish you a great year and know you can do it!
