How to financially prepare for your summer holidays

July 15, 2019

Summer is here and it’s time to have fun. Do you think you can stick to your summer budget? If you are a parent, you may be anxious thinking of the money you have to spend.

You have to pay for extra food, activities to keep your children busy, and many other extras. It can be draining! There is a way to get your finances in control during the summer. Here are a few tips on how you can do it.

  1. Make a budget

If you spend money as needs pop up, you will easily overstretch yourself and become frustrated. Instead, set up a budget and work with it. Deciding beforehand what you are willing to spend your money on will keep you from overspending. It's good to plan and set your summer budget before things get out of control.

  1. Enjoy local attractions

Another thing that drains finances during the summer is flying to exotic locations or taking vacation trips out of state. The truth is, you don't have to fly or drive away from home to have a great holiday. You can have fun for less money at home.

There are probably great places in your local areas you can visit that are fun to be in and less expensive. It could be a free entrance to an amusement park, a visit to the zoo or museum. Check out your local attractions and find something you can do for little or no money to help you save and stay on budget.

  1. Quality time

Sometimes all children need is to have fun and quality time with their parents. They probably don't care if you go abroad to do it or stay home. There are ways to spend quality time with family that doesn't cost a lot.

You could go for picnics, have great movie nights at home, play board games, go swimming at your local swimming pool, play with your pets in the park, ride bikes, etc. Anything that the kids will enjoy doing with you will give them great summer memories.

  1. Bond with friends

You can also unite with your friends to help each other get through the summer without spending a fortune. Hold friendly barbeques in your back yards and socialize or go out for couple dinners in affordable places.

You could also get into exercise programs together if fitness is a way for you to bond. Bonding with your friends is a great way to spend your summer and if you can do things together that help you save money, even better!

  1. Prepare for next time!

You are cutting down on costs this summer, but maybe you don't want to do it next summer. Then you should start saving for your ideal summer vacation next year - now. Plan ahead where you want to go and start putting money away for it.

Try to find things you can cut down on and save the money in your future summer vacation fund. You could cut down on buying coffee outside and make it at home. Or try carrying a packed lunch instead of going out every day for lunch.

Ask your kids to participate in summer saving by giving them piggy banks they can put in some of their allowance for their summer fun. If you do this, next year you will have enough money for your dream vacation.

Have a great summer vacation!
