6 self - care tips for busy moms and dads

What is self-care? Self-care is taking care of your needs as an individual so you can take care of others. Just as you think of your children's needs, ask yourself at least once a day, how am I feeling? Is there something I can do for myself to feel good and relaxed? This is a quick and simple way to take care of yourself and you need it more than you think. 

Benefits of self-care

The importance of self-care for parents is apparent when raising children. For example, children benefit from frequent interactions with happy parents that are present and not overwhelmed.

When you prioritize self-care, your spouse also gets to spend time with a greater version of you, which enhances your bond.  A healthy you, at peace mentally and emotionally, will also result in an excellent performance at work. Overall, investing in self-care is something good for you and those around you.

It's advisable to create a self-care plan. Start by writing all the things you enjoy doing. Also, add some things you would like to do that you feel are fun. It does not have to be expensive or require a lot of time if it is constant in your routine. Here are a few suggestions for your self-care list.

Self-care tips for your peace of mind

  1. Me-Time

You need some time alone each day when you can do anything to care for yourself, have fun, and relax. Tell everyone that you don't want any disturbance during this time unless it's an emergency. It can be 15 minutes of meditation to an hour and a half of bath time to indulge yourself.  Whatever you choose to do, let it restore and rejuvenate you.

  1. Ask for help

One of the things that makes parenting stressful is trying to do it all. If you are one such person, consider asking for help or hiring helpers. You could take the kids to the grandparents occasionally as they would love to spoil their grandkids. You can also hire certified and screened help for an hour or two to find time for yourself. 

  1. Do something for others

Sometimes we feel much better about things when we help others. It may help you appreciate your life or just give you a rush of happy feelings to see someone else happy. You could visit an elderly person, help another struggling parent, or even visit a pet shelter. Try it and make someone's day!

  1. Journal

Usually, as a busy parent, you have so much inside you that you need to decompress. If talking to others is not an option, try writing it down. Journaling is a great way to de-stress and get your thoughts right.  Start with the practice of writing things you are grateful for and let your thoughts run freely on paper.

  1. Counseling

Sometimes talking to a professional counselor is the best way to invest in yourself and your mental health.  Although friends and family are always there to hear us out, they may be part of the problem. Why don't you schedule a bi-weekly or weekly session with a counselor and see how it goes?

  1. Hobbies

A fun self-care tip is to engage in hobbies as often as possible. Find something that you can do whenever you feel stressed for your peace of mind. For example, you could crochet or knit.  You can also paint, color or draw if you are an artistic person.  Cooking is another great hobby, as well as gardening, exercising, and reading. Hobbies are a great way to beat stress!
